Jason Karmanos begins the Sabres front office reshuffle

Now that the trade deadline is over, Kevyn Adams can begin to shift his focus on rebuilding his front office. He has begun that process reportedly by bringing in Jason Karmanos as his new associate general manager.

This move comes a few weeks after Kevyn Adams restructured his scouting staff and it will not be the end of the Sabres moves in their front office renovation. We’ll save that for another day.

Jason Karmanos

Karmanos comes to the Sabres after spending the last six years in the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. Prior to that, he spent 15 years with the Carolina Hurricanes. He was the assistant general manager from Jim Rutherford in Carolina. He was again promoted to that role with the Penguins in 2017 after going to Pittsburgh with Rutherford in 2014.

According to the Penguins team site, Karmanos was in charge of amateur scouting with the Penguins. The 46-year-old also has a background in analytics. He was part of assembling that department with the Penguins and Adams sees him assisting in doing that for the Sabres.

More to Come

As I mentioned a few weeks ago on Twitter, this is just the first step in a handful of moves coming to the Sabres front office. Kevyn Adams also indicated this would be the case during his post deadline press conference. He understands the need to rebuild his hockey operations department to set up his club for success.

I expect them to add to their scouting department and bring in another assistant general manger. However, that may wait until the offseason when contracts expire. One name I would keep an eye on is Scott Luce. He’s currently the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Sabres need to make some moves to establish some credibility around the league and get some experience in that front office to assist Adams. This is a step in the right direction, but they need to follow through now with the proper personnel decisions.

  1. The draft record for Luce is fine I guess – some hits with the Panthers beyond round 1 and the MO for the Golden Knights hasn’t been focusing on drafting and developing, seems they’ve been in win-now mode since day 1.
More eyes for the scouting department can’t hurt though.

  2. Chad,
I realize they have to start building the front office and the analytics dept. however, if he was in charge of Analytics in Pittsburg and still elected to give Jack Johnson a contract, screams Cody Eakin like signings. This is it good. Also, just guessing if he’s been with Pittsburgh for a while, is there any correlation to Carolina becoming good when Karmanos left?
