Expected goals – Expected goal models are a way to measure shot quality for players and teams. They take a variety of factors into account to create an expected goal rating for each shot. If you want to get deeper into the numbers you can read the write up from the Evolving Hockey twins on how they put their model together here. Expected goals give you a better idea of shot quality because they take more into account besides general shot location data that you see in “scoring changes” and “high-danger scoring chances.”

  • xGA (Expected goals against) – Shot quality against
  • xGF% (Expected goals percentage) – Shot quality share percentage

  • xGSA (Goals saved above expected) – This is a goalie stat that evaluates how a goaltender performs against the shot quality that they face.

GAR – Goals above replacement

xGAR – Expected goals above replacement (model created by the Evolving Hockey twins)
