Four Sabres prospects will represent their country in the 2026 World Junior Championship Prospects by Chad DeDominicis - December 25, 2025December 25, 20250 For the hockey enthusiats all over the world, the holidays bring one of the more entertaining tournaments. The 2026 U20 World Junior Championship will begin tomorrow in Minnesota. The United States entered the tournament as the two-time defending champions. They’ll have the benefit of playing on home soil as they seek their third gold medal in a row. The Buffalo Sabres usually are well represented in this tournament with players from their prospect pool. This year will be no different. They’ll have four prospects playing over the next few weeks. Brodie Ziemer Brodie Ziemer will be competing for the Americans for the second year in a row. It was announced yesterday that he would be the squad’s captain this year. This season, he’ll be relied upon as one of the key players to get the Americans’ gold once again. The 2024 third-round pick is in the middle of his sophomore season with the University of Minnesota Gophers. He has 12 goals and 19 points in 19 games in the always-competitive Big Ten Conference. The left-shot defenseman is one of the more intriguing prospects in the Sabres pool, and it will be fun for fans to get a glimpse of him in this tournament. He’s not big, at 6’1″ and 185 lbs., but he’s another one of those defenders who move the puck well with a combination of strong skating. Osburn was a fourth-round pick of the Sabres in the 2024 class. Adam Kleber Adam Kleber is the final Sabres prospect on the US roster. The big right-shot defenseman was the Sabres’ 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2024 class. He’s a different style of defenseman than Osburn. Kleber uses his 6’6″ frame to play a more physical game and is at his best in the defensive zone. He’s playing in his sophomore season at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Through 20 games, he has scored two goals and produced five points. Radim Mrtka The fourth Sabres prospect in the tournament is 2025 first-round pick Radim Mrtka. He’ll once again represent Czechia as an essential piece to their blue line. Sabres fans got a glimpse of the big defender in training camp and a brief stint in the AHL with the Rochester Amerks. Now, we’ll be able to see how he looks on the international stage against his peers. Mrtka has recorded one goal and 16 points in 14 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds. Schedule We had to wait to see what the organization would do with 2024 first-round pick Konsta Helenius. He was eligible to play for Finland in this tournament. The Sabres decided not to loan him to the Finns and instead let him continue developing in the AHL with the Amerks.
