Eight Different Knighthawks Find The Back of the Net as Rochester Rolls Past Panther City 17-9 | NLL Week 6 Recap

In the morning before the Rochester Knighthawks and Panther City Lacrosse Club faced off on January 7, the Knighthawks announced that Connor Fields would be missing the game.

While Rochester remained the favorites in the matchup, questions lurked over who would step up with Fields out of the lineup on offense for the first time in this early season. The answer? Well, everyone.

Ryland Rees got the scoring underway on a transition goal early in the first quarter, his first goal of the season. From there, the next 7 goals for Rochester were scored by different Knighthawks: Ryan Smith, Austin Hasen, Holden Cattoni, and Curtis Knight in the first quarter, and Matt Gilray, Turner Evans, and Thomas Hoggarth in the second. During that time, Panther City was only able to muster up 3 goals, two from Jonathan Donville, as Rochester had jumped out to an 8-3 lead, with Panther City pulling Nick Damude for Cam MacLeod in the first quarter. After the two teams exchanged two goals apiece in the final four minutes of the first half, the Knighthawks took a 10-5 lead into the break. Rochester didn’t hold up in the second half, as Thomas Hoggarth scored three more goals and Holden Cattoni scored his third of four on the night in the third, and then Ryan Smith added two more in the fourth to complete the hat trick with Cattoni adding his fourth to round up the scoring on the night for a 17-9 final.

When the final whistle blew, summer teammates in Peterborough, Holden Cattoni and Thomas Hoggarth, each had four goals and three assists. Curtis Knight only scored once but assisted on six goals to match their six-point nights. Rylan Hartley didn’t have his busiest night of the season, but still saved 37 shots and only gave up 9 goals.

For Panther City, Jonathan Donville had 3 goals and 3 assists to lead his team in the loss. The performance gave the 2021 first-overall pick his first rookie of the week honors. Dean Fairall and Nathan Grenon both scored twice for PCLC, while the Knighthawks’ defense held Will Malcom and Patrick Dodds scoreless. Cam MacLeod stopped 29 shots and allowed 12 goals in 46 relief minutes.

Week 6 Around The League

The recap of the Bandits’ 18-9 victory over Georgia is part of the Week 7 preview. Philadelphia’s 14-9 win over Las Vegas was part of the Week 6 preview.

Halifax Thunderbirds 14 – Albany FireWolves 11: Despite losing Doug Jamieson to the PUP list earlier in the week, Justin Geddie and the FireWolves were able to hang around with the Thunderbirds for most of the game, never trailing by more than two in the first three quarters and holding an 11-10 lead with 11:10 to play, but a 4 goal run by the Thunderbirds in the final 9 minutes gave Halifax the 14-11 road victory. Randy Staats registered 9 more points with 2 goals and 7 assists, while Chris Boushy and Eric Fannell each had 4 goals. Fannell had the early season first serious nominee for Goal of 2023 to put the icing on the cake for the Thunderbirds.

Toronto Rock 15 – New York Riptide 7

The Riptide went up 3-1 in the first and things were looking up for the team in their quest for a first win of the season, but Toronto outscored them 13-2 in the middle quarters on their way to a 15-7 win. Tom Schreiber had 2 goals and 5 assists to lead the Rock, while Stephen Keogh had a pretty goal of his own as part of a four-point night. Dan Dawson had 5 assists. While their offense got the headlines, holding Jeff Teat to no goals may be what the team hangs their hats on the most from this one.

The loss was the final game in the Jim Veltman era in New York, as the organization relieved the GM of his duties. Rich Lisk will expand his role as Executive VP to also encompass the GM duties.

Colorado Mammoth 9 – Calgary Roughnecks 8

The Mammoth lifted their championship banner on Saturday and then used their championship defense to get the narrow win over their Calgary-based rivals. Rhys Duch had a goal and four assists for the Mammoth, with the goal being his 1000th point in the NLL. With Zed Williams out with illness, Connor Robinson led the team in scoring with 5 goals and an assist.

San Diego Seals 16 – Vancouver Warriors 11

Every betting favorite has won in the last two weeks. Considering that this matchup was expected to be the most lopsided, the 16-11 victory for the home Seals did not surprise anyone. The stars led the way for San Diego, as Austin Staats and Dane Dobbie each had 4 goals and 3 assists, Curtis Dickson had 3 goals and 2 assists, and Wes Berg had a goal and 7 assists. Multi-goal games for Mitch Jones (3G 3A) and Shawn Evans (2G 3A) served as some of the few bright sides for the now 0-4 Warriors, who will also be proceeding with a new GM for the rest of the season, which Paul Tutka broke down very well over at LaxMag.
