Devon Levi signs an entry-level contract with the Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres’ future goal may have arrived in the organization. The team announced today that Devon Levi has signed a three-year entry-level contract. He’ll report to the Sabres and burn the first year of that contract.

It’ll be interesting to see how many starts he gets with the Sabres down the stretch as they continue to push for the playoffs. Eric Comrie’s injury opens an opportunity to get at least one start a week if they want to stick to the three-goalie rotation.

Levi departs Northeastern University with some of the best numbers for a collegiate goaltender.

The Canadian-born goaltender leaves the NCAA with multiple personal awards over the last two seasons. Here is the full list of awards of recognitions:

  • National Rookie of the Year Award (2021-22)
  • Mike Richter Award (2021-22)
  • Mike Richter Award Finalist (2022-23)
  • Eberly Award | Beanpot Top Goaltender (2022-23)
  • Beanpot Tournament MVP (2022-23)
  • Hockey East Goaltender of the Year (2021-22)
  • Hockey East Goaltender of the Year (2022-23)
  • Hockey East Player of the Year (2022-23)
  • Hockey East Rookie of the Year (2021-22)
  • Hobey Baker Award Finalist (2021-22)
  • Hockey East First-Team All Star (2021-22)
  • Hockey East All-Rookie Team (2021-22)

Levi is a fun goaltender to watch. He doesn’t have the prototypical NHL size at only 5’11’ tall. The way he compensates for the lack of size is with his speed, ability to read the play and find the puck through traffic.

He has a reputation as a hard worker and strong mental focus in the crease. You’ll also see him display some of that competitive swagger at times. We saw it on display during the shootout in the Beanpot Championship.
